Entering a new dimension of flexibility: EcoG launches their second generation, fully scalable ‘Powerblock’ architecture with a modular switching matrix serving up to 16 dispensers

MUNICH, GERMANY, 6th May 2025.  EcoG, a leading provider of interoperable operating systems for EV chargers, has unveiled its second-generation reference architecture for powerblocks featuring the award-winning EcoG Connect – the first fully modular switching matrix for Distributed Charging Architecture. The innovation is showcased at the EcoG Ecosystem Booth at Power2Drive.

Charging sites using this truly modular setup are able to scale regarding power, number of outlets, and power flexibly allocated to them. With that, the winner of the Smarter E Award 2024 sets new standards in shaping and scaling charging infrastructure true to site.

Entering a new dimension of flexibility

With EcoG Connect, EcoG introduces a smarter, more scalable way to build and expand EV charging infrastructure. This advanced DC switching matrix simplifies implementation by intelligently allocating power modules to charging outlets — reducing hardware requirements while maximizing efficiency.

Whether you're starting with a compact site or planning for large-scale deployment, EcoG Connect adapts to your needs:

  • Power: Easily scale up by adding power and switching modules as your energy demand grows.
  • Charging Outlets: Expand seamlessly with up to 16 dispensers per Powerblock, adapting to evolving site requirements.
  • Switching: Add flexible routing capabilities with adding switching modules to individual dispensers, ensuring optimal power distribution as your site develops.

With this modular and forward-compatible design, EcoG Connect brings unprecedented adaptability to EV charging infrastructure

Flexibly adapt charging infrastructure to sites

With EcoG Connect, charging infrastructure can now flexibly adapt to the specific requirements of each site – from an initial setup of 320 kW and 4 dispensers, all the way to megawatt-scale systems with up to 16 dispensers by adding power or switching modules. The modular system allows operators to scale their powerblocks in multiple configurations:

  • From 320 with 4 dispensers to 640 kW using 1 switching module rack for 8 dispensers
  • Or 640 kW with 2 switching module racks for 16 dispensers
  • Up to 1.28 MW serving 16 dispensers with a single powerblock

At the heart of this flexibility is the switching module, designed as a tray device, which enables dynamic switching of up to two converters to as many as four dispensers. By inserting these modules into the switching rack, operators can easily build a tailored switching matrix that adapts to the unique needs of each charging site.

By intelligently allocating power where it’s needed, EcoG Connect reduces the number of power modules required, increases efficiency and enhances profitability – all while ensuring seamless performance and site-specific optimization.

Built for Longevity, Designed for Market Success

EcoG Powerblock Reference Designs empower manufacturers with a robust foundation for fast, reliable market access by leveraging standard components that support a long, hassle-free product life cycle. Through the combination of the EcoG Connect Switching Matrix and Control, a comprehensive ecosystem, and detailed reference designs, EcoG simplifies the development of powerblocks and dispensers — whether for established players or newcomers entering the EV charging space.

In collaboration with Rittal, making use of their innovative RiLineX mounting system, EcoG provides a full Reference Architecture for Powerblocks. This blueprint enables EV charger and power cabinet manufacturers to build scalable, future-ready solutions in their own facilities and deliver them directly to customers.

Key benefits of using standard components include:

  • Long-term availability of spare parts – even from multiple vendors
  • Global access to components through standard distribution channels
  • Simplified service and maintenance by globally available power cabinet service providers

With EcoG, manufacturers gain not only a proven technical framework, but also a reliable path to market with products that are easy to build, scale, and support.

Seamless Scalability and Global Reliability for Charge Point Operators

Finally Charge Point Operators (CPOs) benefit significantly from EV charging systems built based on EcoG’s globally available and unified reference designs and manufacturer & supplier ecosystem. By relying on modular, interoperable components and a unified reference architecture, CPOs can scale their infrastructure using products based on the reference design with confidence — from small pilot sites to megawatt-level charging hubs. The use of standard components ensures long-term part availability, simplified maintenance, and consistent serviceability across regions. This translates into reduced operational complexity, faster deployment, and lower total cost of ownership, empowering CPOs to focus on delivering reliable, future-proof charging experiences to their customers worldwide.
